There’s so much joy in finding out you’re pregnant. You’re overflowing with excitement and you can’t stop telling everyone, but then it hits - Morning Sickness. This pregnancy side affect involves a lot of nausea and vomiting which can happen any time of the day. (I’m sure we are all very familiar with this). Morning sickness affects up to 90% of all pregnant women, usually in the first trimester. And isn’t it a bummer that there’s nothing the doctor can give you since you really can’t take any medicine while pregnant. Well, how about dealing with your morning sickness naturally.

You may be thinking that natural remedies are a thing of the past but in fact more and more natural remedies are being used in homes today to treat numerous medical conditions. Many doctors remain “on the fence” about natural treatments claiming they are just old wives tales. However, taking something is better than taking nothing and what do you have to lose? It’s Natural! And it just may be the one thing that helped you through.

Below are some natural remedies and helpful tips for you to try while dealing with your morning sickness. Some remedies may work better than others for different people so don’t be afraid to experiment and try them all to find what works for you.

  • Ginger. This remedy is widely known to help with nausea and vomiting for many generations. Your can try gingerale or gingersnaps. But to get the true affect go for the real stuff. Studies show that the properties found in fresh ginger give an effective treatment. Be creative and sprinkle it on your favorite foods.
  • Tummy-Soothing Teas. Try limiting fluid intake during meals and instead drink more between meals. Some good teas to consider are peppermint iced tea or hot chamomile tea.
  • Switch prenatals. The high iron content found in regular prenatal can induce nausea in many pregnant women. Switching to a low iron formula in the first trimester only (when the risk of anemia is very low) may help with morning sickness. Also, take your vitamins late in the day and skip the glass of water. Instead swallow your vitamin in a spoonful of pudding or applesauce.
  • Move Slowly. Whether it’s getting up in the morning or after a nap, rising or moving too quickly can throw off equilibrium and trigger nausea. Be sure to take it easy and relax with deep breaths.
  • Snack Tricks. Always keep snacks on hand. Carry them in your purse, by your bed and in your car. Do your best to not have an empty stomach but be sure to not have it too full. Think small portions. Try having toast or crackers in bed before rising. But be sure to not drink any liquids, especially water, while munching.
  • Use Your Senses. As changes happen in your body while being pregnant most women develop incredibly sharp sense of smell. Some odors trigger nausea while others help subside it. Carry a piece of cloth in your purse scented with a combination of lavender and peppermint oil. At the first hint of nausea, hold the cloth to your nose and breathe deep for almost instant nausea relief.

What is commonly known as ‘grandma’s Penicillin’? You have got it right. It’s the chicken soup, which has been used since ages as a home remedy for common cold. Some recent studies show that this effective recipe can also work wonders for high blood pressure.

Ai Saiga, a Japanese researcher from Nippon Meat Packers, says that chicken breast contains collagen proteins with effects similar to ACE inhibitors, mainstay medications for treating high blood pressure. Chicken breasts cannot be used to     develop food and medical products for high BP since the proteins are present in very small quantities in the chicken breasts.

During their study, the researchers extracted collagen from chicken legs and tested its ability to act as an ACE inhibitor in the laboratory studies. They have identified four different proteins in the collagen mixture with high ACE-inhibitory activity.

The proteins were then fed to rats used to model human high blood pressure, which produced a significant and prolonged decrease in blood pressure, according to the researchers.

If this study generates positive feedback, it might be a significant achievement in the medical field and great news for so many people who suffer from high blood pressure.

Some days back I went for a facial to a saloon and got totally perplexed. The lady in charge presented me with a long list of options to choose from. Life is a journey full of up’s and down’s. Hardships and adversities are part of everyone’s life. I’m sure we all have felt “the blues”, and been pessimistic at some point in our lives. It’s normal to feel these emotions but if they continue for a long period of time, they may be signs of depression. People are often angry because they are unhappy. If things continue to make a person feel unhappy for an extended period of time, it could lead to mild or major depression (To know the Wikipedia definition of Depression please visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Depression).

Common physical signs of depression include changes in sleeping and eating pattern. Other signs of depression are fatigue, headaches, stomachaches, or other inexplicable aches and pains. It also affects behavior/attitude such as diminished interest and enjoyment of previously pleasurable activities-sex, sports, hobbies, going out with friends, etc. A person may also have difficulty concentrating or making decisions and neglect responsibilities and personal appearance. Emotional symptoms include feeling dejected, apathetic, apprehensive, guilty, pessimistic, irritable, hopeless, negative, empty, suicidal thoughts, and helplessness. Low self-esteem is common with depression.

If you notice signs of depression for two weeks or longer, you should contact your physician. Depression is a treatable disease. The first step for treatment is to recognize the signs of depression. If you or a loved one is suffering from this illness, there are several methods and organization that can help combat this situation. Other than this there are alternative therapies like relaxation, exercise, acupuncture etc which might be helpful.

Depression not only causes suffering to those who are depressed, but it also causes great difficulty for their family and friends who often do not know how to help. Therefore, it is mandatory for every one of us to address this problem the moment we realize its existence.

The “bronzed skin” may look very sexy but is it worth risking your health for it? A sunbath or a tan (Please check http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tanning & http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sun_tanning) bed may make you look like a Greek god or goddess but it will also leave behind an ugly trail of damage to your body. Think before you plunge in for that precarious and momentary pleasure of a beautiful skin.

Before we discuss the harmful effects of tanning equipment and increased sun exposure, one must be familiar with the components of ultraviolet light and how it affects the skin. Sunlight contains two types of ultraviolet (UV) light: UVA and UVB. UVA rays consist of longer wavelengths that penetrate deep into the dermal layer of skin. Limited exposure to UVA rays causes skin to tan; however, most experts agree that overexposure to UVA can lead to other long-term skin damage. UVB rays wavelengths are much shorter, affecting the outermost layers of skin. UVB rays are known as the “burning rays” and are considered more dangerous. Tanning beds and sun lamps generally emit 93% to 99% UVA radiation. This is three times the UVA radiation given off by the sun.

Although tanning industries claim that UVA radiation is safe, medical research disproves this theory. Researchers say that because UVA rays penetrate deep into the skin, they destroy skin fibers and damage elasticity. Long-term effects of UVA rays include premature aging and wrinkles. Scientists agree that UVA rays are less likely to cause burns, but that they are still linked to malignant melanoma, damage to the immune system, weakening of the skins inner tissue, and other types of skin cancers. In fact, studies show that large doses of UVA lead to an increased risk of developing skin cancer. In cases where exposure to light was increased, it was more likely that the damage would exceed the constructive, cellular-repair mechanisms, and a tumor would be more likely to develop.

Both types of UV radiation can cause damage to blood vessels, photosensitivity (allergic) reactions, or even eye damage. According to the CDC (centers for disease control), tanning beds create problems in the eyes such as conjunctivitis and corneal infections. Ultraviolet rays can cause serious damage to the cornea and retina.

The World Health Organization estimates that as many as 60,000 people each year die from too much ultraviolet light, mostly from malignant melanoma - the deadliest form of skin cancer.

Getting some sunshine is important because ultraviolet light spurs the body to produce vitamin D. But people need far less ultraviolet exposure for this than it takes to tan.

Youngsters are often allured into the idea of getting a tan to look glamorous. But the difference lies in the usage of tanning. For how long you tan and how often is what you have to control. And it is important to know your limits. It is different for different people and depends mainly on your skin type. For example, if you have a very fair skin that doesn’t tan, but rather burn, you should only go for very short tanning sessions and use a strong tanning lotion.

Next time, research properly and educate yourself thoroughly before going for a sunbath or to a tan saloon. This way you would be able to enjoy the experience and save yourself from long term harmful effects.

How late is too late for dinner?

A very common question which arises in every health conscience person’s mind is how late is too late for dinner? Does it really affect your health if you eat late?

The answer given by most dieticians and doctors is: There is no cut-off time of dinner. An early dinner proposition is designed to cut down on late-night snacking. Eating dinner late does pose problems: If there’s a lot of time between lunch and dinner we might find ourselves snacking too much or tending to overeat at supper. Doctor’s generally encourage people to eat the majority of their calories when they are the most active. Since for majority of us that time is morning, it is advised to have big meals during the day as breakfast or lunch and check the food intake during night. Overnight during sleep, calories (mostly complex carbohydrates) are burned slowly. So if you act as a glutton at night and cuddle under your quilt, it would just add those extra inches which we all hate.

Eating anything in moderation isn’t bad; nonetheless you should avoid heavy starches at night. Also try to restrain your sweet tooth to compel you to pound on sweets which are nothing but loads of fats. Instead target on plenty of fruits and vegetables as fruits are rich in fiber which are easily digestible by the body and vegetables provide the other necessary nutrients. Vegetables are most effective if they are steamed or had raw as salad. Another healthy option to have vegetables is in the form of soups. Curd and cereals are also healthy options to consider. Frying should be avoided as much as possible but if it has to be done, it should preferably be done in refined sunflower, olive or groundnut oil. And then there is nothing as healthy as water. You should drink plenty of water (but not with a meal or immediately after a meal) throughout the day. Doctors recommend drinking 8-10 glasses of water as a very healthy habit.

Nothing is as important as health. It is rightfully said that health is wealth. Only if you are healthy will your brain function in a productive way and help you achieve your dreams. It just requires a little discipline in your eating habits to help you feel enthusiastic and energetic throughout the day. Health and happiness always go hand in hand and one can never follow the other.

Benefits of eating chocolates!

Fond of chocolates?? hmmmmm Yummy!! But along with giving a watery mouth and taste, chocolates are considered healthy food items by scientists. Earlier chocolates are associated with some health myths. Most of the people think that eating chocolates give rise to health problems especially to tooth and skin. But most of them are wrong. While chocolate does contain sugar, the Eastman Dental Center found that chocolate contains certain phosphates and other minerals which minimize the effect of the sugar. Therefore chocolate is one of the least likely desserts to cause cavities. Also a research conducted at University of Pennsylvania and another at the US Naval Academy shown that eating chocolates have nothing to do with acnes.

Researches have concluded that chocolates give a positive effect on health instead of any negative impact. Chocolate contains flavonoids, powerful antioxidants, stearic acid, phenylethylamine, theobromine plus many essential minerals such as magnesium and iron.  These ingredients are responsible for positive effect of chocolates on body. Flavonoids fight against cancer and heart disease and it exist in a wide variety of foods and beverages also such as apples, peanuts, onions, cranberries, red wine, and tea.

Phenolic compounds gallic acid and the flavonoid epicatechine are present in chocolates. When compared to green tea and red wine, Chocolates had 611 mg of gallic acid (GAE) as compared to 340 in red wine and 165 in green tea. Also chocolate contained 564 mg of epicatechin (ECE) whereas red wine had 163 and green tea only 47. This is the result of a study conducted at Cornell University leaded by Dr. Chang Y Lee.

Antioxidants in chocolates destroy free radicals. Sufficient levels of antioxidants are needed in body to inhibit plaque formation on arterial walls and an increase in LDL cholesterol. Dark chocolate contains over 13000 ORAC units. ORAC measures the effectiveness of antioxidants.

Chocolates do contain fat but it is not unhealthy. The fat content of chocolate is one-third oleic acid, one-third stearic acid and one-third palmitic acid. Oleic acid is a mono-saturated fat like olive oil which is healthy. According to research studies, stearic acid has not effect on cholesterol.

Palmitic acid is the only saturated fat in chocolates which affect cholesterol levels. But some of the saturated fat is needed in body to provide protection against skin cancer which unsaturated fats cannot do. So you can neglect that part and can enjoy your chocolates with fun.

But make sure that the chocolate are of high quality to have high cacao content. It should not be combined with marshmallow, caramel, nougat and other unhealthy substances.

Dark chocolate is more beneficial than milk chocolate. And from now you can eat chocolates without any tension of tooth decay or acnes. But (a big but) that doesn’t mean that you keep on eating and eating. Restrict yourself to eating excess of chocolates. Excess of any food will lead to only lose of health. Moderation is the key. 3.5 ounces per day is the suggested amount you can take. Limit yourself and avoid excess of chocolates. Let it help your health not destroy.

Chew a chewing gum and forget stress!

A latest research stated that chewing gum can help in reducing stress and anxiety.

Andrew Scholey, Ph.D., professor of Behavioral and Brain Sciences, Swinburne University in Melbourne, Australia led this research study to be presented at the 2008 10th International Congress of Behavioral Medicine. It was found that the use of chewing gum was associated with higher alertness, reduced anxiety and stress, and improvement in overall performance on multi-tasking activities.

The study examined the effect of chewing gum in reducing induced anxiety and/or acute psychological stress while participants performed a battery of multi-tasking activities and really it helped relieve anxiety, improve alertness and reduce stress among 40 individuals of average 22 years old on which the study was conducted.

The study was performed on the Defined Intensity Stressor Simulation (DISS) on a multi-tasking platform which reliably induces stress and also includes performance measures, while chewing and not chewing gum.

Anxiety, alertness and stress levels were measured before and after participants completed the DISS. It was revealed that the gum chewers have a reduced anxiety level as compared to non-gum chewers by nearly 17 per cent during mild stress and nearly 10 percent in moderate stress.

Levels of salivary cortisol (a physiological stress marker) in gum chewers were lower than those of non-gum chewers by 16 per cent during mild stress and nearly 12 per cent in moderate stress.

Also participants experienced greater levels of alertness when they chewed gum. Gum chewers showed improvement in alertness over non-gum chewers by nearly 19 per cent during mild stress and 8 per cent in moderate stress.
